Peninsula Volunteers Rosener House Awarded Three Year, $150,000 Grant from Sequoia Healthcare District

April 24, 2007 - Menlo Park, CA

Local non profit organization Peninsula Volunteers, Inc. announced today they are recipients of a three year $150,000 grant from the Sequoia Healthcare District to continue the Rehabilitation services at Rosener House Adult Day Services Center and expand support services for caregivers. The original grant from the Sequoia Healthcare District for the past year has allowed Rosener House to create the interdisciplinary Rehab Team by hiring an occupational therapist and increasing the hours of the speech-language pathologist and physical therapist.

The Sequoia Healthcare District is committed to assisting seniors to access needed services, along with youth access to fitness and nutrition, and staying healthy in time of disaster. The Sequoia Healthcare District has awarded grants of over $3 million for a three year period to 20 local non profit organizations.

At Rosener House, the Rehab Team is an important component of the day program which helps to keep participants functioning at their highest level of independence. The three therapists work together and with activity staff to improve strength and balance, reduce risk of falls, offer caregivers assistance for home care and safety, and help participants with communication problems and swallowing disorders. Day services also benefit the family members by providing respite from the constant responsibilities of caregiving, offering educational opportunities, and making referrals to other resources.

"We are very pleased that the Sequoia Healthcare District has seen fit to renew the grant for the Rehab Team and extend it for another three years. We know this program is making a big difference in the lives of our participants and their families. We see the impact of these therapies in the increased levels of independence in participants on a daily basis," said Director Barbara Kalt. Sandra Darrow of Menlo Park, whose mother has attended Rosener House five times a week for four months, has noticed the difference. "When my mother started the program, I had to lift her from her wheelchair, but since she has been working with the occupational therapist, she is able to get up and walk around on her own a bit at home, and her spirits are much better too."

The Rosener House program is suited to individuals with Alzheimer's disease and other dementia, post-stroke, Parkinson's disease, frailty, or social isolation. As a state licensed adult day program, Rosener House has provided social recreation and therapy to over 4,000 individuals since 1978. For more information about the services of Rosener House, call 650-322-0126.
