Cash for Gold
Benefits Peninsula Volunteers
Meals on Wheels

JEWLERY = CASH = BLANKETS
Thursday, June 2nd

Thanks to all who came to make the Gold for Blankets event a smashing success!

While our target was $1700, we actually garnered over twice that. A lot of seniors in our Meals on Wheels program are going to enjoy those warm blankets this winter (and maybe this summer if we don't get some warmer weather....)

Eat your heart out, Rumpelstiltskin; PVs really know how to spin gold.

If you missed this, we'll probably do it again. Here are some details:

Little House, the Roslyn G. Morris Activity Center

Gold is at an all-time high price. Dig through your jewelry box and find old rings, bracelets, etc. that you are never going to wear. Bring it to Little House and Gold Gals (a women-owned company) will test it and hand you a check for your real gold. How easy is this?

  • You will be paid on the spot!
  • PV will receive their money, a percentage of everything paid out during the event.
  • Proceeds will be used to purchase 288 blankets for our Meals on Wheels clients.
  • Refreshments will be served and lunch is available for purchase at the Little House Cafe

To RSVP - please call Linda Drew (650) 598-0190 or email goldparty@peninsulavolunteers.org

Vital Aging Conference
Sunday, May 22, 2011
10:00 AM - 3:45 PM

Peninsula Volunteers, Inc., the Menlo Park pioneer in senior services, will hold its Third Annual Vital Aging Conference on May 22, 2011, at Little House, The Roslyn G. Morris Activity Center, in Menlo Park, California. In its mission to help those who built our community continue to live well in their own homes with dignity, Peninsula Volunteers annually gathers experts to inform and inspire on the process of aging.

This year the Conference will feature five nationally recognized experts in their fields: Keynote Speaker Dr. Eric Shapira, Dr. Walter Bortz, Dr. Moira Fordyce, Kathy Berra, and Laura Stec.

The Experts

Dr. Eric Shapira, DDS, MA, MHA, will be the keynote speaker. He practiced dentistry for over 30 years in Half Moon Bay, California. He is an educator and author of A New Wrinkle: What I Learned from Older People Who Never Acted Their Age, winner of the Pinnacle Book Achievement Award. He is a board member of the American Association of Senior Peer Counselors, a Bilingual Senior Peer Counselor for the San Mateo County Department of Mental Health and a former commissioner of the San Mateo Commision on Aging.

Dr. Walter Bortz, M.D. is a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at Stanford University's School of Medicine and is recognized as one of America's most distinguished scientific experts on aging and longevity. His research has focused on the importance of physical exercise and its effect on aging. He is the past co-chairman of the American Medical Association's Task Force on Aging, Former President of the American Geriatric Society, and is currently the Chairman of the Medical Advisory Board for the Diabetes Research and Wellness Foundation. Dr. Bortz will speak about his new book, Next Medicine: The Science and Civics of Health.

Dr. Moira Fordyce, M.D., is a geriatrician, Adjunct Clinical Professor at Stanford University School of Medicine, a founding member of the California Geriatrics Society, and a board member of the American Society on Aging. She has published and spoken on numerous topics related to aging. Dr. Fordyce will speak about "Busting the Myths about Aging."

Kathy Berra, MSN, ANP, FANP, FAAN, is Clinical Director of the Stanford Heart Network at Stanford University School of Medicine, and specialist at Cardiovascular Medicine and Coronary Interventions in Redwood City. She is one of the key developers of a community-based program for cardiac rehabilitation, which has been a model for similar programs nation wide. Ms. Berra will speak about "Exercise & Fitness in Relation to a Healthy Heart."

Laura Stec, Executive Chef, has 25 years of experience as a chef, educator, professional speaker and consultant. She is the author of the book Cool Cuisine, Taking the Bite of of Global Warming. Laura speaks about food and how it relates to health. Chef Stec will speak about "Feeding the Mind and Soul."

The doors will open at 9:30 am and the Conference will begin at 10am. The keynote address will begin at 12:45. The Little House Café will be open for lunch and serving a fixed price full meal for $9 (soup, salad, bread, choice of turkey or salmon Caesar salad, and drink).

Little House is located at 800 Middle Avenue in Menlo Park, California.

Horsin' Around - Great Fun, Great People, No Kidding!

Peninsula Volunteers, Inc., has been known throughout the years for its extraordinary Gala events. This year is no exception!

Horsin' Around - a Western Bonanza was held at the National Center for Equine Facilitated Therapy on Runnymede Road in Woodside on Saturday, May 21, 2011.

Kimber Sturm of San Carlos and Terri Carville of Los Altos were the Chairs of this hoedown, beginning at 4:00 p.m. with "thirstquenchers" and "trailtizers"", including Don Pilar's famed tequila. ("Don Pilar" owns Amigos Grill in Portola Valley.)

Horse drawn carriage rides and a parade of miniature farm animals, all dressed for the occasion by Riley's Place, led the list of attractions.

A fun-filled evening followed with music by the Dick Green Band, gaming by Full House Casino Events, performances by the San Mateo County Horsemen's Association Senior Color Guard, the Pacific Coast Vaulting Club. Cheryle Bacon, "The Cowgirl", whipped 'em up (yes, she uses a bullwhip), shot 'em up (yes, she uses six-shooters and a shotgun), and roped 'em up (you get the picture.

A "Clint Eastwood look-alike" made the rounds for pictures. You can't guess how many people fed him a line to which he would reply, "Make my day!"

And speaking of pictures, the line was long and laughing for the famous "Texas Butt Sketcher", Krandel Lee Newton, flown in just for the event. The Butt Sketcher has captured the likes (or the butts) of Warren Buffet and Bill Gates.

"People loved it. They came decked out in their Western best and had a boot-kicking good time," Kimber Sturm said

Event proceeds support Peninsula Volunteers programs for seniors -- Meals on Wheels; Little House, the Roslyn G. Morris Activity Center; Rosener House Adult Day Services; and Peninsula Volunteers Properties (affordable senior housing at Crane Place and Partridge/Kennedy Apartments in Menlo Park).
