MEALS ON WHEELS

Every week, Peninsula Volunteers, inc., delivers over 1000 hot meals to the homebound in south San Mateo and north Santa Clara counties who are unable to cook for themselves.

For those who have been homebound for a long time, the delivery of a hot meal in the middle of the day may be the only connection they have with the outside world. For others, momentarily sidelined for a few days or weeks, the arrival of a delicious meal can be a precious lifeline that allows them to get on their feet again.

This program is available to qualified individuals who are homebound and unable to prepare or shop for food. Meals on Wheels can be provided during a short-term convalescence or long-term disability.

HOW DO I APPLY?
Thank you for the many delicious meals...If you live in one of the following communities call 650-323-2022 to apply for service:

    ATHERTON
    EAST PALO ALTO
    MENLO PARK
    PORTOLA VALLEY
    REDWOOD CITY
    SAN CARLOS
    WOODSIDE

Elsewhere in San Mateo County, call 1-800-675-8437.

WHO PAYS FOR THIS SERVICE?
Each meal costs about $10.00 to prepare, package and deliver to your door. Since the program is supported by Peninsula Volunteers, along with some San Mateo County funding, the suggested donation is $4.25 per meal. We'll send you a postage-paid, addressed envelope along with a monthly statement at the end of each month of service. Just write out a check and drop it in the mail at your convenience. Additional donations are greatly appreciated and no one is turned away because of the inability to pay. If you are concerned about your ability to donate, call the Meals on Wheels office.

WHAT ARE THE MEALS LIKE?
Each meal provides 1/3 of the recommended daily allowance of nutritional requirements. Our meals are low in fat, salt, sugar and provide adequate dietary fiber. Designed by our own Dietician, the menus emphasize the use of fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables. The meals are prepared and packaged in the kitchen of Peninsula Volunteers Little House, where cooking is mostly from scratch.

CAN I GET HELP WITH MY DIET?
The Meals on Wheels nutritionist is available to work with you regarding your personal nutrition needs. She can provide expert advice about salt intake, diabetes control, weight loss or weight gain, etc. You can arrange a consultation by calling the Meals on Wheels Office.

WHAT IF I NEED HELP WITH SOMETHING BESIDES NUTRITION?
Our Assessment Specialist will make an appointment to visit with you in your home shortly before you begin receiving meals. She will discuss your health condition and living situation with you, and provide you with information about other services you may want or need. We will contact you periodically to see how you are getting along and you can call anytime with questions or concerns.

HOW DO I CANCEL THE SERVICE?
Call the office to cancel the meal service. To resume service, please call two full days before you wish to begin receiving meals again. If you have been off the program for more than 30 days you will need to re-apply for service in order to resume the meal delivery.
